Kilometers of Roadway per Square Kilometer of Land in EU States
The chart above shows the kilometers of roads per square kilometer of land in EU states. No surprise that small states that are very urban in nature have more roads per square kilometer of territory.
Miles of Roadway per Square Mile of Land in US States
The chart above shows the miles of roads per square mile of land in US states. For comparison, a typical urban square mile in Manhattan has approximately 25 miles of road for every square mile of area. The most densely paved state, New Jersey, does not even come close.
Road to Rail Ratios in EU and US Regions
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU and US region. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region. For instance, the Eastern EU has nearly 10 times more kilometers of road for every kilometer of rail. Not surprisingly, all US regions have high road to rail ratios while only one EU region rivals them: the Southern EU.
Road to Rail Ratios in US Regions
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every US region. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region. For instance, the West has 31 more miles of road for every mile of rail. All regions of the US have a pretty similar road to rail ratio that lies somewhere around 30:1 (the figures in the chart are rounded to the nearest whole number).
Road to Rail Ratios in EU Regions
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU region. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region. For instance, the Southern EU has 31 more kilometers of road for every kilometer of rail. All regions of the EU save for the Southern EU have a road network that is less than 20 times larger than their rail network.
Road to Rail Ratios in EU and US States
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU and US state. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the state. For instance, the Netherlands has 48 more miles of road for every mile of rail. Only two states have a road network that is 50 times larger than their rail network and they are both located in the Northeastern US.
Road to Rail Ratios in EU States
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU state. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the state. For instance, the Netherlands has 48 more kilometers of road for every kilometer of rail. Only two states have a disparity of over 40:1 between the length of their road and rail networks: the Netherlands and Greece.
Road to Rail Ratios in US States
The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every US state. The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the state. For instance, Rhode Island has 318 more miles of road for every mile of rail. Rhode Island is the only state with such a high ratio as every other state has a ratio of 60:1 or less.
Vehicles per Mile of Roads in EU and US Regions
The chart above shows the number of motor vehicles in EU and US regions by mile of roads. With the exception of the Northeastern US and the Northern EU, the EU regions have a higher vehicle to road length ratio than the US regions do which is a very different result from the vehicles to residents ratio.
Vehicles per Kilometer of Roads in EU Regions
The chart above shows the number of motor vehicles in EU regions by kilometer of roads. The Southern EU and the Western EU have the most vehicles per kilometer of roadway just as they have the highest vehicle to resident ratio.
