The chart above shows the largest metropolitan economies in the United States that happen to also be among the world's largest 300 metropolitan economies based on the Brookings Institution. Each region of the US has a city in the top four.
Findings
- Of the 80 US metropolises that make up 300 of the world's largest metropolitan economies, 28 of them are located in the South.
- The Western US has the second largest number of large metropolitan economies at 18.
- The Northeast and the Midwest each have 17.
Caveats
- The data is from 2014.
Details
New York City is the largest urban economy by far at almost double the GDP of the second largest economy, Los Angeles. Chicago and Houston are the leading economies in the Midwest and the South respectively.
These 80 cities account for over $11 trillion of the nation's GDP.
