Findings
- California is the largest economy by far in the US accounting for just over one-seventh of the total US GDP.
- It takes the eight largest states (California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Jersey) to make up more than half of the total US GDP.
- The smallest state economy, Vermont, makes up 0.17 percent of the total.
Caveats
- The data is from 2016.
Details
Each of the regions except for the Midwest is accounted for in the top four economies. Illinois shows up fifth with the largest Midwestern state GDP.
