Where Do Christmas Trees Come From?

Dec 25, 2017
Chart of Christmas tree producing states

The chart above shows the number of Christmas trees produced by each state.  Unfortunately, Christmas tree production is very skewed and thus the chart does not look like a tree.  Oh well, it's the thought that counts.  But still, get it together states that are not Oregon or North Carolina.

Findings

  • Oregon grows just under one-third of all the Christmas trees in the US.
  • North Carolina grows just under one-fourth of all the Christmas trees produced in the US.
  • Aside from the above two states, Michigan and Pennsylvania are the only two other states that raise over ten million Christmas trees.
  • The smallest Christmas tree producing state, South Dakota, produces only 0.01 percent of the total number of Christmas trees grown in the US.

Caveats

  • The data is from 2014.
  • Arizona, Nevada, North Dakota, and Wyoming had no data.
  • Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Utah have few producers and the United States Department of Agriculture does not release their data because it would be too easy to identify how big the individual farms are.

Details

There is no region that dominates Christmas tree production and the production spans various different climates.

The United States in its entirety produces 159,910,676 Christmas trees.  No matter what state you're in, Merry Christmas!
