Per Capita GDP by EU Region, Fourth Quarter 2018

The chart above shows the per capita annualized nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in each EU region as of the fourth quarter of 2018 in euros, the change from the previous quarter, and the per capita GDP one year prior.  Every single region's economy grew both over the past quarter and the past year.

Findings

• The difference between the region with the largest per capita GDP, the Northern EU, and the region with the smallest, the Eastern EU, is €36,431.64 (up from €35,716.97 last quarter and up from €36,363.88 last year).  The Northern and Eastern EU had the largest and smallest per capita GDP respectively both last quarter and last year.
• The Northern EU has 3.77 times the per capita GDP that the Eastern EU does.  The ratio of largest per capita GDP to smallest per capita GDP was up from 3.75 last quarter and down from 3.93 last year.
• All four regions saw their per capita GDP rise in current euros from the previous quarter.
• All four regions saw their per capita GDP rise in current euros from last year.

• Data is from the fourth quarter of 2018.
• The data is seasonally adjusted in current euros.
• The data is annualized by multiplying the quarterly figure by four.
• All figures are rounded to the nearest hundredth.
• The Northern EU consists of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
• The Western EU consists of Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
• The Southern EU consists of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta.
• The Eastern EU consists of Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Details

In absolute terms, the Southern EU saw the smallest increase over the previous quarter with a growth of €134.54.  The Northern EU had the largest growth with a gain of €877.98.  Year over year, the Southern EU had the smallest increase with a gain of €481.60 while the Western EU had the greatest increase with a gain of €1,164.15.

In relative terms, the Southern EU had the smallest increase over the previous quarter with a 0.51% rise in per capita GDP while the Northern EU had the greatest increase with a 1.80% rise in per capita GDP.  Year over year, the Northern EU had the smallest growth with a 1.61% rise in per capita GDP while the Eastern EU had the largest growth with a 5.77% rise in per capita GDP.

The Northern EU has the smallest range in per capita GDP with a low of $44,072.90 in Finland to a high of $54,327.03 in Denmark.  The Western EU has the greatest range with a low of $36,542.13 in France to a high of $121,348.73 in Luxembourg.

The Northern EU has a per capita GDP that is higher than all Southern and Eastern EU states and all but two Northern EU and Western EU states and is bested by four states in total.  The Eastern EU has a per capita GDP that is lower than all states in all other regions and only bests four states from the Eastern EU.
