Crude Oil Production in EU and US States

The chart above shows the crude oil production in each EU and US state as of January 2019 (unless otherwise noted - see caveats below) in thousands of barrels, the change from the previous month, and the production one year prior.  Texas produces three times more crude oil than the entire EU combined.

Findings

  • The difference between the state with the greatest production, Texas, and the state with the least (that produces crude oil), Arizona, is 149,703 thousand barrels (down from 151,760 last month and up from 120,707 last year).  Texas and Arizona had the greatest and least production respectively both last month and last year.
  • Texas has 149,704 times the production that Arizona does.  The ratio of highest production to lowest production was down from 151,761 last month and up from 120,708 last year.
  • The median crude production in the 28 EU states is 29.32 thousand barrels (down from 32.98 last month and down from 40.31 last year) and the mean 1,570.71 thousand barrels (down from 1,621.76 the previous month but up from 1,566.53 last year).
  • The median crude production in the 15 EU states that produce crude is 476.45 thousand barrels (down from 491.11 last month but up from 461.79 last year) and the mean 2,932 thousand barrels (down from 3,027.29 the previous month but up from 2,824.18 last year).
  • The median crude production in the 50 US states is 63 thousand barrels (up from 61 last month and up from 43 last year) and the mean 6,170 thousand barrels (down from 6,227 the previous month but up from 5,177 last year).
  • The median crude production in the 31 US states that produce crude is 755 thousand barrels (same as last month but up from 599 last year) and the mean 9,952.1 thousand barrels (down from 10,043.8 the previous month but up from 8,350 last year).
  • The median crude production in the 78 EU and US states is 29.32 thousand barrels (down from 32.99 last month and down from 40.31 last year) and the mean 4,519.15 thousand barrels (down from 4,573.94 the previous month but up from 3,881 last year).
  • The median crude production in the 46 EU and US states that produce crude is 530 thousand barrels (up from 502.10 last month but down from 556 last year) and the mean 7,662.9 thousand barrels (down from 7,755.8 the previous month but up from 6,581 last year).
  • Thirty-eight (23 US, 15 EU) states did not see a change in their crude production from the previous month, 16 (10 US, 6 EU) produced more, and 24 (17 US, 7EU) states produced less.
  • Thirty-five (21 US, 14 EU) states did not see a change in their crude production from last year, while 24 (17 US, 7 EU) increased production, and 19 (12 US, 7 EU) decreased production.

Caveats

  • Data is from January 2019 except for Greece, Malta, and the Netherlands which are from December 2018 and Germany which is from November 2018.
  • The figures for EU states are converted from metric tons to barrels at a rate of 7.33 barrels to the metric ton which is the number the US uses for the conversion.  This figure may vary depending on the type of crude, and different countries use different measures for the conversion since the number of barrels per metric ton can range from six to eight barrels depending on the crude.
  • All figures are rounded to the nearest hundredth.

Details

In absolute terms, Texas saw the largest decrease over the previous month with a drop of 2,057 thousand barrels.  North Dakota had the biggest spike in production with a gain of 277 thousand barrels.  Year over year, Denmark had the largest decrease with a drop of 586.40 thousand barrels while Texas had the greatest increase with a gain of 28,996 thousand barrels.

In relative terms, Spain had the greatest decrease over the previous month with a 33.33% drop in production while Lithuania had the greatest increase with a 33.33% gain in production.  Year over year, Spain had the greatest decrease with a 60.00% drop in its production while Kentucky had the greatest increase with a 184.13% gain in production.

Texas accounted for over two-fifths the production of crude in the EU and US at 42.47%.  It, with North Dakota accounted for just over half of the entire crude production in the EU and US at 54.57%.  Adding in the United Kingdom, New Mexico, and Oklahoma amounts to three-fourths of the EU and US total at 75.69%.  Adding in Colorado, Alaska, California, and Wyoming accounts for over nine-tenths of all crude produced in the EU and US at 90.77%.

Pennsylvania saw the largest jump in crude production rankings going from a rank of 28 last month to a rank of 24 this month.  It bested France (stayed at 25), Alabama (stayed at 26), the Netherlands (from 23 to 27), and Michigan (from 27 to 29).  The Netherlands was bested by four countries dropping from a rank of 23 to a rank of 27.  It was bested by Hungary (from 24 to 23), Pennsylvania (from 28 to 24), France (stayed at 25), and Alabama (stayed at 26).  Year over year, Hungary saw the largest gain in rank going from a rank of 30 last year to a rank of 23 this month.  It bested (in descending order of production): Pennsylvania, France, Alabama, the Netherlands, Croatia, Michigan, Austria, and Arkansas.  The Netherlands fell six spots from last year to this going from a rank of 21 to a rank of 27 and was bested by (in descending order of production): Illinois, Poland, Hungary, Pennsylvania, France, and Alabama.
