Net Worth of Billionaires per Square Kilometer in EU States in 2018

Jan 21, 2019
Net Worth of Billionaires per Area of Each EU State

The chart above shows the net worth of the billionaires of each state per square kilometer.  It is no surprise that a geographically small state tops the chart, but what is surprising is that the fourth largest state in terms of area would rank second.

Findings

  • The difference between the state with the highest billionaire net worth per area, Cyprus, and the state with the lowest (that has billionaires), Romania, is $1,897,463 per square kilometer.
  • Cyprus has 377.95 times the average billionaire net worth that Romania does.
  • The median average net worth of billionaires in the 28 states is $64,098 and the mean $353,218.
  • The median average net worth of billionaires in the 20 states that do have billionaires is $329,286 and the mean $494,505.
  • Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, and Slovenia do not have a single billionaire.

Caveats

  • Billionaire data is from 2018.
  • Area data is from 2007.
  • Figures are rounded to the nearest hundredth.

Details

Germany which has the highest billionaire net worth overall, ranks fifth when its population is taken into account, fifth in average net worth of its billionaires, and second in this metric.  France, whose billionaires have the highest average net worth, ranks second in the overall wealth of its billionaires, seventh when its population is taken into account, and sixth in this metric.  Cyprus leads in this metric as well as the per capita metric but ranks 12th in the overall wealth of its billionaires, and 14th in the average wealth of its billionaires.  Clearly its small population and small size boost it in these rankings, whereas Germany ranks in the top five in all metrics.

Of the six states whose billionaires have a total net worth of over $100 billion, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France rank first, second, and third, respectively and all three have an net worth per square kilometer of over $575,000.
