The chart above shows the per capita GDP and change in per capita GDP over the last year in EU regions.  The Eastern EU had the highest growth rate in the metric but the Northern EU had the highest overall growth and managed to maintain its lead over all other EU regions.

Findings

  • The difference between the region with the greatest absolute growth in per capita GDP, the Northern EU, and the region with the least, the Southern EU, is €778.93.
  • The Northern EU has 2.07 times the per capita absolute economic growth that the Southern EU does in the past year.
  • The difference between the region with the greatest growth rate in per capita GDP, the Eastern EU, and the region with the least, the Western EU, is 6.49 percentage points.
  • The Eastern EU has 4.18 times the per capita economic growth rate that the Western EU does in the past year.

Caveats

  • All percentages are rounded to the nearest hundredth.
  • The Northern EU consists of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
  • The Western EU consists of Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
  • The Southern EU consists of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta.
  • The Eastern EU consists of Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Details

No one region surpassed another in per capita GDP over the past year.  However, the Southern EU is the only region whose growth rate was higher in the past year than it was in the past decade.

Only the Western EU had a state whose per capita GDP contracted over the past year.
