The chart above shows the per capita GDP and change in per capita GDP over the last year in EU states. Luxembourg continues to maintain a commending lead in per capita GDP while Ireland had the greatest growth in the metric last year and Romania had the greatest growth rate.
Findings
- The difference between the state with the greatest absolute growth in per capita GDP, Ireland, and the state with the least, Bulgaria, is €2,600.
- Ireland has 9.67 times the per capita absolute economic growth that Bulgaria does in the past year.
- The difference between the state with the greatest growth rate in per capita GDP, Romania, and the state with the least, Sweden, is 10.35 percentage points.
- Romania has 9.07 times the per capita economic growth rate that Sweden does in the past year.
- Only the United Kingdom saw a decrease in its per capita GDP last year.
- Poland pulled ahead of Croatia in the past year when last year they both had the same per capita GDP.
- Estonia surpassed Greece.

Even though Luxembourg had the third lowest growth rate, it still managed to have the second highest growth overall due to its very large per capita GDP.
The median per capita GDP for the 28 EU states went from €21,900 in 2016 to €23,150 in 2017 while the mean went from €27,982 to €29,061.
