Waterways in EU Regions

The chart above shows the length of waterways in EU regions.  The Western EU has more waterways than the other three regions combined.

Findings

• The difference between the region with the most waterways, the Western EU, and the region with the least, the Southern EU, is 20,096 kilometers (12,487 miles).
• The Western EU has 13.87 times the waterways that the Southern EU does.
• Only the Western and Eastern EU have more than 10,000 km (6,214 miles) of waterways.

Caveats

• Waterway data is from 2016 except for Belgium (2008), Germany (2013), Luxembourg (2009), and Romania (2015).
• All figures are rounded to the nearest whole.
• Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden did not have any data.
• The Western EU consists of Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
• The Eastern EU consists of Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
• The Northern EU consists of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
• The Southern EU consists of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta.

Details

Seven states (Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Hungary, and Romania) each have more waterways than the entire Southern EU.  It should be noted that the numbers for the Southern and Northern EU are made up of one country each, Italy and Finland respectively.

The European Union as a whole has 41,917 km (26,046 miles) of waterways.
