The chart above shows transportation based carbon dioxide emissions in EU states. One-third of all carbon dioxide emissions from transportation use come from two countries: Germany and the United Kingdom, adding in France and Italy makes up more than half of the transportation based carbon dioxide emitted within the EU.
Findings
- The difference between the state with the most emissions, Germany, and the state with the least, Cyprus, is 82 million metric tons.
- Germany emits 191 times the carbon dioxide that Cyprus does.
- Seven out of 28 states are responsible for three-fourths of the carbon dioxide emitted from transportation sources.
- Only one state emits less than one million metric tons: Cyprus.
- The mean number of metric tons emitted in the EU from transportation sources is 16,854,252, and the median 6,457,530.

Only Croatia emits more than two times (170%) the amount of carbon dioxide as the next highest emitting state, Cyprus. The only other states to emit more than half of the next highest emitting state are the Netherlands (79% more than Poland), the United Kingdom (64% more than France), Luxembourg (58% more than Latvia), and Estonia (57% more than Croatia).
The European Union as a whole emits 471,919,069 metric tons of carbon dioxide from transportation sources annually.
